Writing a Research Paper: Assignment requirements

Know your Assignment

Every research paper is different. Before you begin your research it is best to know what is expected of you.

Important things to know:

  • Assignment length (word count or page length)
  • How many sources are required?
    • Do the sources need to have been published in a certain time range?
    • Do the sources need to be a certain type: peer reviewed article, book, newspaper, etc.
  • Does the paper require a certain layout or heading sections?
  • Does the paper need to answer a certain question or can you pick your own topic?
  • What citation format is required?
  • Format requirements-double spacing, certain font types/sizes, etc.
  • Due date

Plan Your Research

Try breaking down your research into smaller manageable parts with deadlines to schedule out the process. This will help it feel less overwhelming.

Example:

  • Decide on a research topic by April 13.

  • Begin background research by April 19.

  • Fine 8 scholarly articles by April 26.

  • Complete research paper outline by May 2.

  • Complete rough draft of paper by May 8.

  • Edit and submit paper by May 10.

Always leave yourself time to edit your paper. It’s best to give yourself a few hours or a day if you can, from finishing the paper to editing it. This will allow you to read it with fresh eyes.
